The Elegance of Kimono

Let's explore the world of kimono fashion today. Yes, people still do wear kimonos, and it's more diverse than you would imagine!

Formal Ceremonies: Weddings call for splendid furisode (long-sleeved kimonos), often adorned with vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Tea ceremonies see the graceful houmongi (visiting kimonos) with elegant designs.

Festivals and Matsuri: Embrace the festive spirit in bright and cheerful kimonos like yukatas, featuring playful patterns and delightful colors.

Summertime Yukata: Feel the breeze in yukatas, perfect for summer outings like watching fireworks with their lightweight cotton and vivid patterns.

Geisha and Maiko: Witness the enchanting sight of geisha and maiko in their gorgeous furisode, symbolizing their apprentice status.

Special Occasions Abroad: Across the globe, kimono lovers celebrate in a variety of styles, from classic to contemporary.

My late grandmother, an avid social dancer in heels, believed sitting with legs tucked in caused legs not to be straight. She loved skirts but had mixed feelings about her legs. (I never had to sit properly on tatami mat at home during the childhood. My legs are straight, thanks to grandma hahaha)

Kimonos are not confined to specific occasions or settings. Even in everyday life, the elegance of kimono shines bright. Sumo wrestlers, known for their strength and tradition, embrace the yukata as their daily attire off the stage, showcasing the timeless charm of this traditional garment, while noh and kabuki players captivate audiences in their exquisite kimonos, each carrying a unique touch.

From joyous celebrations to solemn moments, the kimono remains a symbol of cultural significance. Funerals witness the grace of tomesode black kimonos adorned with kamon (family crests), paying homage to tradition and honoring loved ones.

But that's not all! In tourist areas like Kyoto, you can rent kimonos and stroll the streets, immersing yourself in the elegance of traditional Japanese attire while sightseeing.
